Vietnam slashes 471 small hydro plants in power development plan

It would have had a combined installed capacity of 2,059MW.

Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade revealed that its Power Development Plan 7 (PDP7) will not include 471 small and cascade hydro plants that would've had an aggregate capacity of 2,059MW. The government added that another 213 potential projects were declined due to environmental and efficiency issues.

Some of the removed projects are the Pa Ma, Song Giang, Dong Nai 6 and Dong Nai 6A, and Ngoc Dinh.

The decision to remove these projects was a result of a three-year review and deliberation. Vietnam currently has 306 operating hydropower plants with an installed capacity of approximately 15.5GW.

Vietnam's revised PDP7 was revealed late March and laid out plans for power generation expansion through mixed energy sources. It predicts US$148b worth of generation investments until 2030. The installed capacity will rise to over 135GW.
