Vena Energy to expand offshore wind in Taiwan

The company will launch two new projects in the country.

Vena Energy has launched two new offshore wind projects in Taiwan with a total capacity of 1.8 gigawatts (GW).

The projects, Wei-Na and Wei-Long, are in participation in Taiwan’s auctions for the third phase of its Offshore Wind Zonal Development.

“The development and generation of offshore wind projects are instrumental to accelerating the energy transition,” Daniel Astbury, Head of Wind at Vena Energy, said.

“We will leverage our experience in other Asian markets and utilize our Corporate PPA capabilities with international off-takers to develop a robust pipeline in APAC.”

The 1,200-megawatt (MW) Wei-Na Offshore Wind Project will be located 20 kilometres off the coast of Miaoli County. It will span over an area of about 126 square kilometres at a water depth of about 52-88 metres.

The 600MW Wei-Long offshore wind project will be located 43km outside Changhua County, spanning approximately 76 sq. km. at a depth of about 40-62 metres.

The projects are expected to use large wind turbines with a single capacity of 14MW to 20MW.

“Vena Energy has operated and invested across the Taiwan renewable energy sector for several years, successfully building over 400MW of solar capacity,” Will Feng, General Manager of Offshore Wind Development in Taiwan, said.

“The selected offshore wind sites have been carefully assessed to exclude environmentally sensitive and restricted areas.”
