Japan's Shikoku Electric to scrap one nuclear unit, restart another

Its oldest reactor at Ikata NPP will be decommissioned in May.

On March 25, Japan's Shikoku Electric Power Co announced that it will decommission the unit 1 reactor at Ikata NPP come May. The unit is the company's oldest reactor.

According to reports, the company had mulled over restarting the reactor which will be 40 years old next year. It is about to reach the maximum reactor age and extensions of up to 20 years can only be approved only if special inspections are done.

Shikoku Electric has also aplied for a final inspection to restart its unit 3 at Ikata NPP. It's eyeing to restart the unit in July once it passes the final inspection.
