Myanmar decides against exporting power to Bangladesh

Myanmar needs more power for industries.

According to analysts, the withdrawal of US and European economic embargo opened opportunities for foreign investment in Myanmar.

This also pushed its power requirements up prompting it to announce that they are unlikely to export electricity to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh launched a simultaneous move to import electricity from its two neighbours India and Myanmar in 2009.

Dhaka succeeded to sign deals to import 250 MW of electricity from Indian state-owned power plants and another 250 MW from private companies.

Myanmar had initially expressed its interest to export electricity from two planned hydropower plants having total capacity of 575 megawatts in Rakhaine state, which is very close to Bangladesh border.
