xBangladesh cabinet okays Renewable Energy Authority Act
The Cabinet on June 18 approved the draft of Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority Act, 2012
aiming to increase the production and use of green energy in the
country.
The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the government has
initiated the renewable energy law framing to bring use of the renewable energy under a legal framework as use
of the renewable energy including biogas and solar energy have been increased in the country in recent years.
In the backdrop of adverse impacts of global climate change, the use of renewable energy has been increased
across the globe, he said.
The Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority will be replaced the existing Energy Cell and the
bill will be placed as a 'Finance Bill' in parliament after approval of the
President.
Headed by a chairman, the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority will be consist of five full
members and a number of part-time members, including of private sector.
Today's cabinet also endorsed a proposal for signing a bilateral agreement on air-traffic between Bangladesh
and Myanmar, updating the existing law of 1977.
Under the agreement, five private and public sector airlines would operate seven passenger and four cargo
flights every week between the cities of the two countries.
