Pakistan power sector criticized for lack of sustainability

Pakistan's power sector is no more profitable for transmission companies and distribution companies and is becoming more unaffordable for consumers.

This is the warning of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Pakistan President Tahir Basharat Cheema, who said that the sector lacks sustainability.

Cheema said that currently, there is no umbrella or controlling body over power sector, which is now being monitored by the regulator, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority that has rotted this vital sector through non-professionalism.

Profitability for the power operators and affordability for the consumers is need of the hour, for which the regulator will have to change its policiies, he added.

He also stressed upon the people to change their living style and adopt the culture of doing all business and other works during daytime.

According to a survey-2010, he said, there was peak power consumption even at 1:05 am and “It means, we are going other way round than rest of the world in terms of living behaviour.”
