India to undertake R&D in power sector

India's power ministry will boost Research and Development in the power sector.

The ministry came out with its "National Perspective Plan for R&D in Indian Power Sector" to promote innovation by sharing the expertise and experience, forge industry-institute cooperation, strengthen the national innovation capability, strengthen R&D infrastructure, and develop and sustain man power for R&D in power sector.

The Central Electricity has invited research project proposals for major thrust areas relevant to power sector applications. These include thermal power generation, hydro power generation, renewable and distributed generation, transmission, distribution, energy efficiency and environmental considerations.

The approved projects will partly be funded by the power ministry.

For a country where power demand is expected to surge over the coming few years, such an R&D initiative is astep in the right direction.
