Assam's memorandum to PM: Seeks allocation of gas from small pockets to tide over power crisis
Although Assam has abundant gas reserves, their exploitation have not been optimum so far which has denied the
state self - sufficiency in power. As the state is not connected to the national gas grid, setting up of new
gas based power generating plants have become unviable. This is the main reason as to why the 200MW Amguri
power project, which was to be implemented as a part of the Assam accord, had to be shelved.
8To tide over the power crisis, the chief minister of Assam has requested the prime minister to allocate gas
from small fields which are not being utilized by ONGC, some part being flared.
8These gas fields are: Khoraghat and Nambar in Golaghat district and Sonabarighat and Bhubandar in Barak
valley.
8The state government desires to utilize the gas from these fields for putting up small gas based power
projects to tide over the power crisis in Assam.
