TNB, SEDANIA to study power generation in Malaysia’s dams, reservoirs

Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s wholly-owned subsidiary TNB Research and SEDANIA Innovator Berhand’s sustainable energy arm SEDANIA Technologies entered a partnership to assess the potential power generation from excess water in dams and reservoirs across Malaysia.

In a joint statement, the companies said the first project will be in Kota Tinggi in Johor.

SEDANIA will be installing TNB Research’s micro-hydropower turbines which have 30 to 40 kilowatts of capacity each and can generate up to 305,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually from the released waters.

Across the 70 water dams and reservoirs in the country, the micro hydropower energy source could potentially generate over 40 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, which can power around 10,000 homes.

They added that the technology can benefit local industries in the manufacturing, commissioning, operations and maintenance of micro-hydropower turbines as they are developed locally.
