South Australia unveils plan for $240m green ammonia plant

$37m will be allocated to upgrade the Port Bonython jetty.

South Australia has taken its plans for a green hydrogen export industry a step further, with its newly launched plant project. The plant will be the largest ammonia plant across the globe, 60 times more than the size of Australia’s biggest electrolyser at Tonsley, in Adelaide.

The first stage of the $240m H2U Eyre Peninsula Gateway Hydrogen Project will see the installation of a 75MW electrolyser near Whyalla, which is capable of producing enough hydrogen to create 40,000 tonnes of ammonia annually.

The plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

“The $240m demonstrator phase of the project is of global significance, but it is just the precursor to a much larger production and export facility that could see us also strengthen our energy ties with traditional trading partners,” said South Australia premier Steven Marshall.
