It was granted a provisional authority to operate last 17 January.

SN Aboitiz Power’s 24-megawatt (MW) Magat battery energy storage systems (BESS) started commercial operation in the Philippines’ reserve market on 26 January.

In a statement, SN Aboitiz said the project will be used mainly for the Luzon grid’s ancillary services, after receiving a provisional authority to operate from the Energy Regulatory Commission on 17 January.

The project co-located with the company’s Magaat hydroelectric power plant in Ramon, Isabela, uses liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries and a 230-kilovolt power transformer connected to the grid.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in April 2022, with the construction completed in July 2023.

In December 2023, the plant concluded testing and commissioning with the grid operator.
