Philippines to receive SEA's first-ever floating energy solution

An order for a barge-mounted, 54 MW energy storage system has been made.

Power distribution services provider Aboitiz Power Corporation's Therma Marine Inc. (TMI) has secured a barge-mounted, 54 MW energy storage system from power equipment manufacturer Wärtsilä.

To be delivered on an engineering, procurement and construction basis, the barge will be installed next to TMI’s already existing thermal power barge with a capacity of 100 MW in Maco, Davao de Oro.

The first one of its kind to be deployed to Southeast Asia, the floating energy solution will have 10 Wärtsilä GridSolv Max systems, all backed by the company’s GEMS energy management platform, aboard a floating barge.

A floating power barge allows fast supply of electricity to areas with limited infrastructure and is a mobile asset, enabling relocation or trade, Wärtsilä said.

“The solution will provide flexibility for TMI in their ancillary service contract with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines,” the company added.

With the order placed in September 2020, the delivery is slated to be completed in Q4 2021.
