Philippines posts $121.6m energy efficiency investments

The investments were for establishments from energy-intensive industries.

The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) recorded $121.6m (PHP6.8b) in investments in energy efficiency from 2021 to 2022 as submitted by designated establishments (DE) identified as belonging to energy-intensive industries.

In a statement, the DOE said these energy investments pertain to projects that use energy-efficient technologies and practices such as lighting retrofit, automated lighting control system or smart control system, and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) upgrades, amongst others.

A rise in investments was seen in various technologies which include solar photovoltaics, variable frequency drives, district cooling system, HVAC system, and compressed air systems.

The DE covered by the report includes private entities in commercial, industrial, transport, power, agriculture, and public works, amongst other sectors.

Of the total investments, $6.4m (PHP360m) were for Type 1 DE or those that have an annual energy consumption of 500,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to four million kWh.

Around $109.1m (PHP6.1b) were from Type 2 DEs ir with an annual energy consumption of over four million kWh in the previous year.

The DOE added that 4,782 DEs with annual energy consumption threshold of over 100,000 kWH posted an investment of about $5.5m (PHP306m).
