OTPC, APDCL form JV to develop 250MW battery storage in Assam

ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited (OTPC) and the Assam Power Distribution Company (APDCL) signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture company to develop a 250-megawatt (MW)/500MW-hour battery energy storage system project.

In a statement, ONGC said the project, which will be developed in a phased manner in Assam, has an investment of around $246.2m (Rs 2,000 crores).

OTPC Managing Director Sanil Namboodiripad said the project will support the improvement of the state’s power availability during peak load hours, integration of renewable energy generation, and grid reliability.

“The energy storage project will bring in multiple avenues of employment, boost local businesses, improve utilization of green energy, carbon emission reduction and overall socio-economic development in Assam,” the managing director said.

APDCL Managing Director Rakesh Kumar said that the project is crucial for the integration of their upcoming solar power projects, and will pioneer the implementation of an energy storage system in the state.
