Osaka Gas drops plans for coal power plant in Yamaguchi

It considers scaling down the project to a 600MW ultra supercritical coal plant.

Osaka Gas will drop its plan to build a coal-fired power plant in Yamaguchi, tentatively named Nishiokinoyama Power Plant, it said in an announcement.

“In light of the changing business environment of the electric power industry and future risks, Osaka Gas has decided to withdraw from this business project as a result of comprehensive consideration based on the company’s investment criteria,” the company said.

“We will consider scaling down the size to a single 600MW ultra supercritical (USC) power plant or building a few 300MW integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants,” Electric Power Development (J-POWER) executive managing officer Hitoshi Kanno told a news conference, Reuters reported.

Osaka Gas further added that its parent company, Daigas Group, will continue to strive for the “achievement of stable, eco-friendly, and economically efficient energy supply.”

Plans for the 1.2GW plant were jointly established by Osaka gas, J-POWER, and Ube Industries in March 2015.
