Neoen, Tesla to build 100MW lithium-ion battery in Australia

The system will be set up near Jamestown.

Tesla and the French renewable utility Neoen have been selected through a competitive bidding process to provide a 100 MW/129 MWh Tesla Powerpack system (a lithium-ion battery), which will be set up near Jamestown (South Australia) next to Neoen's 100 MW Hornsdale wind park, according to Enerdata.

The Tesla Powerpack gear will store renewable energy generation from the Hornsdale facility and then deliver electricity during peak hours to help maintaining stable power supplies to South Australia's electrical infrastructure. The project is meant to help South Australia to cope with storms and reduce the occurrence of electricity blackouts, such as the state-wide blackout that occurred in September 2016.

"The Hornsdale wind facility was approved in December 2015 for a total of up to 270 MW, of which the 100 MW first stage (Hornsdale I) was commissioned in November 2016," Enerdata said.
