LNG-fed power projects eyed for the Philippines
The Philippines is making room for additional 1,400 megawatts LNG power projects.
A plan crafted by the Department of Energy will supplement the current gas capacity of 2,700 megawatts coming from three power plants in Batangas and have been utilizing indigenous gas from the Malampaya field.
A draft of the Philippine Energy Plan reveals the development of three-LNG projects, which will likely come on stream from 2016 until 2021.
In its roster include the 300-500MW capacity being proposed to be supplied with LNG by Shell Philippines; the 300-MW project of Energy World International; and another 480-MW facility which is the subject of a feasibility study in Limay, Bataan.
Meralco gave pronouncements that it sees LNG-fired power projects feasible at bigger capacities reaching up to 1,500MW.
Meralco president Oscar S. Reyes admitted that what has been in DOE’s mind is to set up an LNG regas terminal in Batangas so the facility can also serve as “back-up for the Malampaya (field).”
