KEPCO, MHI ink deal for test facility at Himeji No. 2 Power Plant
The agreement involves CO2 separation and recovery system testing.
Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) for the construction of a test facility and demonstrations at the Himeji No. 2 Power Plant.
The agreement involves the pilot-scale test facility (5 tons-CO2/day scale) for the liquid amine-type carbon dioxide (CO2) separation and recovery system of the plant, as well as demonstration tests for the CO2 separation and recovery from the exhaust gas.
Both entities will also construct a test facility at the Himeji No. 2 Power Plant and hold demonstration tests in FY 2025 to develop a CO2 capture process that can be applied to the current cycle system in other thermal power facilities.

Previously, KEPCO and MHI had cooperated in the installment of a pilot-scale test facility (2 tonsCO2/day scale) for the CO2 separation and recovery system at the Nanko Power Plant In 1991. Afterward, they developed an amine absorbent solution and a CO2 capture process that had an efficient separation and recovery of CO2 from exhaust gas.
KEPCO will also assist with the overall design of the pilot-scale test facility, the demonstration tests, and the utility supply for the operation of the facility. Meanwhile, MHI will manage the design and construction of the facility, alongside the demonstration tests.
With the partnership, both entities aim to contribute to the achievement of a zero-carbon society.
