Japan to reveal future energy mix in three years

Energy mix will retain nuclear energy.

Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshimitsu Motegi said the government’s goal will consider the amount of renewable energy available and the number of nuclear reactors in service. He noted it will be possible to accelerate the schedule for setting the target.

"We will set a goal for the best energy mix in three years and establish it in 10 years," he said.

The government is in the process of developing a medium- to long-term energy plan that reflects the situation after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster in March 2011.

The government is legally required to review the Basic Energy Plan at least every three years by taking into consideration changes in the energy situation.

The previous plan compiled in 2010 sought to boost Japan’s reliance on nuclear power to some 50% of its energy needs in 2030 from around 30% before the disaster. The Fukushima nuclear disaster put paid to this goal, however.
