Germany's Lipp GmbH, MetPower Venture Partners to build biogas plants in Philippines

These will be the first industrial-scale biogas facilities in the region.

Metro Pacific Investments (MPIC)-owned MetPower Venture Partners has joined forces with German plant and tank construction services provider Lipp GmbH in building the first industrial-scale biogas facilities in Mindanao.

The two plants will process food company Dole Philippines’ pineapple waste and transform it into biogas. Once operational, the facilities will generate clean energy that will replace fossil fuel for power, steam, and heat generation, a statement from German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry read.

According to MetPower Venture Partners’ website, it is undertaking a waste-to-energy project that will generate 5.7 MW of clean energy for Dole as well as contribute to the overall carbon dioxide emission of the Philippines by 100,00 tonnes per year.

With an investment of ₱1b ($0.021b), the facilities are expected to be completed in H1 2021.

“We see strong potential for biogas production in the Philippines,” said Manuel Lipp, managing director of LIPP GmbH.
