Fluence Energy, Rich Electric to deploy 100MW battery in Taiwan

Fluence Energy and Taiwanese firm Rich Electric entered a strategic partnership to deploy a 100-megawatt (MW) battery-based energy storage system to support state-owned electric firm Taipower’s automatic frequency control (AFC) services.

In a statement, Fluence said the project, located in Hualien, is expected to be completed by mid-2023. It is also seen to be one of Fluence’s largest AFC projects in Taiwan.

Jan Teichmann, senior vice president and president for the Asia Pacific at Fluence said Taiwan has become one of the most active energy storage markets in the region.

“The growth momentum of the energy ecosystem is driven by a clear target and objectives for renewable energy and net-zero emission set by the local government,” Teichmann said.

Rich Electric Chairman Eric Chen said energy storage systems are “indispensable to the deployment of grid-connected renewable energy systems.”

Fluence said Taiwan is installing storage systems to enhance the flexibility of power dispatch and avoid power outages due to intermittent renewable energy supplies.

It added that Taipower has set a goal of 1,000MW storage capacity by 2025. The market’s Bureau of Energy and Ministry of Economic Affairs aim to have a 500MW storage capacity via ground-mounted photovoltaic systems.
