Collgar eyes 1.7 GW of wind power projects in Western Australia
Five projects will be built to complement existing ones.
Collgar Renewables, which operates the largest wind farm in Western Australia, has announced plans to beef up its portfolio by building five new wind projects across the Australian state.
In a statement, the company said the five projects will have a total capacity of 1.7 gigawatts. These will be located in areas where there is a significant wind resource and that complement the existing renewable energy capacity currently in the South West Interconnected System, it added.
“The team from Collgar has deep power market expertise gained from developing and operating the existing wind farm in Merredin, and this knowledge makes Collgar well placed to ensure a streamlined development and approval pathway to bring these projects to life,” Collgar CEO Sam Pearce said.
The company’s Collgar Wind Farm is the state’s largest wind farm located 25 kilometres south east of Merredin. It occupies 18,000 hectares of land and features 111 Vestas V90 wind turbines.
It is generating a total of 222 megawatts of power, translating to an annual output of 630-750 gigawatt-hours that can supply electricity to around 130,000 West Australian homes.
Collgar is 100% owned by Rest, one of Australia’s largest profit-to-member super funds.
