Australia OKs 3,626 MWh energy storage projects in Victoria and South Australia

The government of Australia has approved six energy storage projects with a combined capacity of 3,626 MWh through its Capital Investment Scheme.

Of the total approved tenders, 1,996 MWh was allocated to South Australia, namely ZEN Energy’s Solar River Energy Storage System (ESS), Pacific Green Technologies’ Limestone Coast West Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Pacific Blue’s Clements Gap BESS, and EnergyAustralia’s Hallett BESS.

The remaining 1,630 MWh was allocated to Victoria, namely EnergyAustralia’s Wooreen BESS, and Progress Power’s Springvale Energy Hub.

Authorities said the projects can run for up to four hours and can power one million homes from 2027.

The six projects have committed a total investment of US$8.39m (A$12.5m) of shared benefits to local project communities and US$4.36m (A$6.5m) of initiatives for local First Nations groups, as well as extensive use of local supply chains.

These projects will be finalised once the Capacity Investment Scheme Agreement is signed.
