26.5MW Sonnedix Tanabu solar plant starts operations

The plant can produce 33,000MWp of clean energy in its first year.

Sonnedix Japan has started the commercial operations of the 26.5-megawatt (MW) Sonnedix Tanabu solar photovoltaic plant last 31 January.

In a statement, Sonnedix said the power plant located in the town of Yamade at the Iwate prefecture is expected to produce 33,000MW-hour of clean energy in its first year of operation, capable of providing power to more than 7,500 households.

The power plant can also avoid over 16,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, and the electricity it will generate will be sold through an 18-year plus power purchase agreement.

“2022 will see continued expansion of our solar platform in Japan, as we expect to bring two more solar PV plants to operation in the first half of this year, building on our growth in 2021,” Sonnedix CEO Axel Thiemann said.

“This is a testament to Sonnedix’s commitment to the Japanese market, as we continue to actively seek opportunities to expand our global footprint and push forward the energy transition,” he added.

The addition of the 8th largest scale solar PV project by Sonnedix Japan brings the Group’s Japanese portfolio to 360MW-peak, with additional 55MW expected to start operations in the first half of 2022. 

Sonnedix Japan is managing a total capacity of around 500MW.
