West Bengal discom plans 80 MW Teesta hydel project
West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) intends to develop the 80 MW Teesta Low
Dam-V hydro-electric project in the State.
The company has requested the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to specify the terms of reference
(TOR) for undertaking the environment impact assessment study on the project that would comprise 4 units of 20
MW each.
The company has estimated a levelised tariff of Rs 3.01/KWh for the project whose cost is tentatively reckoned
at Rs 613.67 crore.
In the Form-1 filed with the environment ministry for securing the TOR, the company says: “Presently five
projects are envisaged and are in different stages of implementation on river Teesta and Rangit and Teesta Low
dam Project-V is the fifth project being envisaged on the downstream of the Teesta Low dam Project-IV.”
It adds: “The proposed Teesta Low dam -V H.E. Project is located on the Teesta River in the state of West
Bengal. The Teesta River forms the boundary with West Bengal and Sikkim.”
