Remote Philippine islands get off-grid solar power

Some 5,551 homes in Polillo Group of Islands has been electrified through off-grid solar power.

The project was undertaken by Japanese joint venture firm TeaM Energy, private sector operator of the Pagbilao power plant in the area.

According to TeaM Energy president Federico E. Puno, the installation of solar PV systems has freed households from dependence on generators.

The energization of the remotest areas in Polillo island was a co-venture with the Philippines' Department of Energy covered three municipalities and 17 barangays.

Puno has intimated that the ‘energization work’ will be replicated.

The company intends to become part of the government’s goal into achieving 90-percent household electrification by 2017.

Puno described the electrification initiative in Polillo island as one that involved the “hardest to reach places in the country.”
