Myanmar sets sights on building gas-fired power plant

The Myanmar electric power authorities signed an MoU with the Toyo-Thai Corporation on conducting feasibility study for a natural-gas-fired and combined cycle power plant.

It is the fifth MoU of its kind signed on Saturday with foreign companies after those for generating power from wind and from gas- fired ones.

The project, to be built in Yangon' Ahlone township, would play a part in satisfying power demand in next summer, said Minister of Electric Power-2 U Khin Maung Soe as saying.

The Toyo-Thai company is to make feasibility study for a 100-megawatt combined cycle power plant and environment and social impact.

Myanmar produced up to 9.71 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2011-12 but the demand is still not met.

According to high demand, the government is striving to produce electricity from natural gas, diesel, coal fire, solar power, wind power, bio-gas and waste fuel in addition to hydro-power.
