Indian steel firm to install 120 MW power plant to satisfy power needs
Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited is installing a waste gas based power plant with a capacity of 120 MW by financial year 2013-14.
The company, which also operates the Vishakhapatnam steel plant, intends to maintain and strengthen its cost competitiveness by continuously pursuing cost management strategies and exercising close control over operational and capital expenditures.
The state-run steel manufacturer is accordingly attempting to utilize captive power to meet approximately 90% of its power requirement.
Further, the company is trying to reduce its dependence on coal and furnace oil by using by-product gases generated in its coke ovens, blast furnaces and steel melt shop to supply heat to various metallurgical units and for electric power generation.
In addition, RINL is in the advanced stages of installing equipment in its sinter plant for the recovery of waste heat and this is likely to generate an additional 20.6 MW of power.
