Commissioning of Kudankulam reactor postponed again
Controversial nuclear plant should have become operational in 2007.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India, Ltd has delayed the commissioning of the first 1,000 MW capacity unit at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project to July instead of June.
The project’s delays have been due to non-sequential supplies of components from Russian vendors.
Villagers in the vicinity under the banner of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy have been opposing the project for years fearing for their safety in the wake of nuclear plant accident in Fukushima, Japan in 2011.
Kudankulam is located some 650 km from Chennai and is equipped with two Russian-made reactors generating 1,000 MW each.
