Eku Energy to develop its 1st BESS project in Japan

Global energy storage specialist Eku Energy will be developing its first battery energy storage system (BESS) in Japan with acapacity of30 megawatts (MW)/120 MW-hours.

In a statement, Eku Energy said the Hirohara BESS project in Miyazaki Prefecture is scheduled to begin construction in the second half of 2024 and is targetted to start operation in July 2026.

Hirohara BESS could store powerthat couldprovide electricity to around 63,000 households for four hours.

“The Hirohara battery energy storage system is EkuEnergy’sfirst project in Japan set to reach Financial Close and our latest global project that combines our global energy storagespecialisationcoupled with our deep local presence,”Daniel Burrows, Head of Eku Energy APAC, said.

“The policy settings in Japan support investment in Battery Energy Storage and are compatible with delivering safe, secure and reliable green energy in a cost-effective manner to energy consumers, which is our mission,”he added.

Eku Energy will own the project, whilst Tokyo Gas will fully own the operating rights for 20 years.
