AGL's 2GW Liddell plant will not be extended beyond 2022

The coal-fired plant's scheduled shut down in 2022 will push through.

Australian Gas Light Company (AGL) confirmed it will not extend the operating life of the ageing Liddell coal-fired power plant beyond its scheduled decommissioning in 2022.

According to Enerdata, this decision was taken in April 2015 already but the company confirmed it again, thus ending the ongoing discussions about the plant's future and comes at a time when Delta Electricity was considering to acquire the asset.

The 2,000 MW facility is located near Muswellbrook at Lake Liddell. Located in New South Wales (Australia), it belongs to the biggest Australian coal-fired assets and generates about 8 TWh of power per year, enough to meet the electricity consumption needs of nearly one million homes.

"It is slated for shutdown in 2022 as was put into service in 1971. The plant was acquired by AGL from Macquarie Generation (MacGen) for A$1,505m (US$1.4bn) in September 2014," Enerdata said.
