AboitizPower eyes building more hydro plants in Mindanao, Philippines

How will they tackle the current oversupply in the area?

Philippines-based IPP AboitizPower said it plans putting up more hydropower facilities in Mindanao, but it is still biding its time given the electricity oversupply in the area.

AboitizPower has just recently completed its 68MW Hedcor Manolo Fortich Hydro power project in Bukidnon. According to Hedcor, a wholly owned subsidiary of AboitizPower, the Manolo Fortich Hydroelectric Power Project is seen to generate about 68.8MW of clean and renewable energy for Mindanao. Based on the early exploration stage, the project will be designed to have two cascading plants.

The first plant, Manolo Fortich Hydro 1, is looking to have an installed capacity of 43.4MW. Meanwhile, the second plant, Manolo Fortich Hydro 2, will have an installed capacity of 25.4MW.

“We’re looking at more hydro facilities but we’re also taking into account that there’s a lot of power in Mindanao. As a matter of fact the excess in Mindanao is grabe, as you say. We’re preparing ourselves but that will have to wait until demand catches up with supply,” Antonio Moraza, COO of AboitizPower, said in an interview with a local paper.
