NTPC sees generation losses of 14 BUs during Apr'11-Feb'12
Crippled by low schedule and coal shortages, the country's premier thermal power utility, NTPC Ltd, has raked up a massive
generation loss of 14 billion units (BU) up till February, 2012.
8These coal shortages are clearly evident in the coal availability factor, which witnessed a fall of 3.92% from the previous year for the
October-December, 2011 quarter.
8Specifically, the coal availability factor went down from 92.71% in the 2010 quarter to 88.79% in 2011.
8However, despite the fall in coal availability, electricity generation actually increased from 54.73 BU in October-December, 2010 to 56.39 BU
over the same period in 2011.
8Still, the 'overall' loss in electricity in energy generation, it may be said, took its toll on NTPC's financial for the quarter.
8Despite a meager increase in gross margin for the October-December quarter, the Net profit of Net worth ratio actually fell. Net profit to
net worth, which is an indicator of profitability and return on shareholders funds ended up at 11.93%, down 2.48% from last year's quarter.
