Korea Electric pursues Philippine power expansion projects
Kepco is interested.
This was admitted by Kepco Philippines President Kyu-byeng Hwang regarding expansion plans in the Philippines.
Kepco or Korea Electric Power Corporation will be joining the bandwagon of players, which shall be expanding their investment portfolios in the deregulated power industry.
He said their main concern is re-evaluating prospect on their proposed 200 to 300-megawatt project which will supposedly serve the electricity needs of the shipbuilding facility of Hanjin Heavy Industries in Subic.
But Hwang lamented that the greenfield 600-MW coal project, part of its investment commitment to the Philippine government, has been posing some hurdles.
“It’s a difficult (decision) for now because RP Energy is building 600 megawatts in Subic,” he stressed. Redondo Peninsula Energy is the corporate vehicle that will bring the proposed 600-MW coal plant facility of Meralco and partners into fruition.
Beyond Subic though, Kepco noted that it is poised to look for some options sites, and Visayas is very much in the line-up.
