Hong Kong launches 1st offshore LNG terminal

The LNG will be supplied to CLP’s Black Point Power Station and HK Electric’s Lamma Power Station.

CLP Power Hong Kong and the Hongkong Electric Co., started the operations of the market’s first offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal that will help stabilise the fuel supply.

In a joint statement, CLP Power and HK Electric, which jointly developed the project in 2020, said the terminal is located to the east of Soko Islands.

“A secure and stable energy supply not only supports the smooth operation of society but also serves as the foundation for high-quality economic development,” said HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee.

CLP Power and HK Electric said the world’s largest floating storage regasification unit vessel, Bauhinia Spirit, is moored at the terminal’s jetty to receive, store, and regasify LNG before natural gas is sent to the subsea pipelines to CLP Power’s Black Point Power Station and HK Electric’s Lamma Power Station.
