Singapore allots US$8.5m for PV cell research

Norwegian firm Renewable Energy Corporation ASA will do the research.

The grant through Singapore's Energy Innovation Office (EIO) will assist with its efforts to develop and industrialize cost-effective and high performing modules based on back-contact cells using its Metal Wrap Through (MWT) technology. REC will work with partner ASM Technology Singapore Pte Ltd. (Singapore) on this project.

This new technology has the potential to optimize manufacturing processes while increasing module power to benefit solar consumers.

REC said the business-friendly environment in Singapore and its strong IP protection, government support and skilled workforce makes it a strategic location for the company.

EIO’s Clean Energy Research Program (CERP) has undertaken several initiatives to advance the development of Singapore's clean energy industry, including establishing public sector R&D centers, competitive funding and grant development programs.

The fifth and final grant from CERP concentrated on improving crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV cell manufacturing processes and technologies, as well as thin-film PV cells based on the Chalcopyrite materials system.

REC currently produces wafers, cells and modules at an integrated PV manufacturing facility in Singapore
