Philippines approves country’s largest wind farm
Will be located at the town of Burgos in Ilocos Norte province, northern Luzon.
Energy Development Corporation has received approval from the Department of Energy to push through with its US$300 million wind farm project. The Burgos Wind Project will have a capacity of 87MW and will become the largest wind farm in the Philippines.
EDC President Richard Tantoco said this milestone affirms the company’s efforts to pursue and fast track the project in order to be the first to achieve commercial operations by 2014.
“Our recently closed US$80 million club loan plus US$170 million we raised brings our total cash to US$461 million. We have, without a doubt, a fully funded business plan,” he said.
The Burgos wind project is EDC's entry into the wind power sector, complementing its geothermal, hydro and natural gas facilities.
The Burgos wind project is expected to generate approximately 233 GWh annually, enough to supply the energy demand for over a million households.
