India says it needs nuclear power to survive

India’s current installed capacity is 2.11 GW.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India, Ltd said India has to depend on nuclear power for its future needs since thermal, hydropower and solar power cannot meet its growing electricity demands.

India’s current installed capacity is 2.11 GW and will require 4.25 GW of power by end of 2020. NPCIL said new nuclear power plants such as Kovvada will spur the economic activity on the lines of Kalpakam, which had witnessed rapid development in the last two decades.

It said some US$13.3 billion will be invested in the Kovvada project that will provide direct employment to 18,000 persons during construction. The first phase of the 6000 MW plant will be ready by 2018 if plans are executed as planned.

NPCIL has given a categorical assurance that the Kovvada nuclear project in Srikakulam district will be among the safest in India.
