Huaneng Power generation drops 2.44 % in Q1

Low domestic demand to blame.

Huaneng Power International, Inc. generated 74.31 billion kWh, or a decrease of 2.44% over year-on-year. Total electricity sold by the company amounted to 70.21 billion kWh, representing a decrease of 2.25% over the same period last year.

One of the five largest power producers in China, Huaneng said the decline in power generation was due to low domestic power demand in the first quarter. Nationwide thermal power generation saw a slight increase of 0.87% for the first quarter, with negative growth in southeast coastal areas and modest growth in other regions.

In Gansu and Yunnan, hydropower output increased considerably which affected the rate of growth in the thermal power sector.

Since Huaneng’s installed capacity is mainly fuelled by thermal power generators and distributed in southeast coastal areas, electricity generated by the company fell over the same period last year.

The company has no cogenerating units in Hebei, Shanxi, Henan and Gansu. The increased cyclic non-operation of non-cogenerating units of the company during the heating season had affected its output of electricity in these areas.
