Hathazari Power Plant Fined Tk 10 lakh for Polluting Halda River
Public sector Hathazari Peking Power Plant (HPPP) was fined of Tk.10 lakh for alleged pollution of the water of Halda River recently through dumping effluents of the plant.
Department of Environment, Chittagong announced this penalty to HPPP for polluting and destroying the fish spawn in the only fish breeding centre of South Asia in current season .
Project Director of HPPP summoned him at DOE office on Tuesday and DOE Director Munir Chowdhury declared this penalty to HPPP in front of the project Director. In this connection, Engr.Jasimuddin and Engr. Md. Nure Alam were summoned before the DOE office in Dhaka recently.
Mentionable that furnace oil procured for HPPP on April last dumped in the Halda river water by negligence of the concerned officials caused damage of huge quantities of mother fishes and fish spawn in the breeding centre of Halda. Following the news published in different local dailies about the pollution of HaldaRriver water , DOE took the matter seriously with the HPPP .
This is first instance of convicting penalty to a public organisastion for polluting the river, sources said.
