Environmentalists oppose location of Rampal power plant

The relocation of the proposed 1,320 MW Rampal coal-fired power plant is beiing demanded by environmentalists.

The Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) that represents the environmentalists, said that the plant would release toxic chemicals harming biodiversity of the Sundarbans.

The group explained that the power plant will dump hot water into the river and gravely affect a variety of species of marine life at adjacent water bodies throwing them on the verge of extinction.

Bangladesh and India are jointly implementing the project at Rampal in Bagerhat near the world’s largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans.

BAPA secretary general Dr. Md Abdul Matin said the government seems to be “very desperate” to implement the Rampal power plant project as it started different works including land acquisition.
