China using massive quantities of clean energy

Consumption was 8% of total energy use in 2011.

The National Development and Reform Commission said China is using more non-fossil energy, and is also using more natural gas and hydroelectricity. Its report, "China's Policies and Actions for Addressing Climate Change," showed the country consuming 283 million tonnes of non-fossil energy in 2011, up 3.4% over 2005.

China’s goal is to cap the country's total energy consumption at four billion tonnes of coal equivalent by 2015, while increasing its use of hydropower, wind power, solar power and biomass energy.

China built hydropower generators with a capacity of 14 million kw last year, raising its total hydropower capacity to 230 million kw. Generators for another 55 million-kw are being built.

Capacities for wind and solar power grew by 16 million kw and 2.1 million kw, respectively, last year.

The report said China is heavily the construction of large-capacity clean coal-fired plant equipped with modern technology that causes less pollution compared to small traditional furnaces. China has 40 coal-fired plants with capacities surpassing one million kw, the most in the world.
