Australia invests $91m in Powering the Regions fund to cut carbon emissions

This will fund renewable energy projects amongst others.

Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water announced an investment of $91m to boost efforts in reducing carbon emissions in heavy industries.

In a statement, the department said the funding will be used for six projects under the Powering the Regions Fund:

  • $37.2m to capture methane at Kestrel Coal in Bowen Basin, Queensland
  • $28m for hybrid renewable energy at Incitec Pivot Fertilisers in Phosphate Hill, Queensland
  • $9.8m to produce lower emissions ammonia at Dyno Nobel in the Bowen Basin, Queensland
  • $7.5m to reduce emissions from chemical production at CSBP Limited in Kwinana, Western Australia
  • $5.4m to improve energy efficiency while producing aluminium at Boyne Smelter in Gladstone, Queensland
  • $3m for electrification at Viva Energy Refinery in Geelong, Victoria

The department said it will also invest in cleaner fuels and new technology to eliminate emissions from industrial processes.

This latest funding is on top of the $133.9m Safeguard Transformation Stream allocation announced in April.
