20 Indian power plants not complying with emission standards

Not complying with emission standards.

This is the case with twenty power plants across, according to environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan.

Under the WaterAct, 1974 and the Air Act, 1981, it is mandatory for the power plants to install pollution control equipment to comply with the prescribed standards.

It is the duty of the owner or occupier of the power plants to set up requisite pollution control equipment.

Natarajan told the Parliament that power plants that have not complied with the prescribed standards have been issued directions.

Chhattisgarh has the maximum (five) number of power plants which have not complied with the prescribed emission/effluent standards. The states of Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh follow closely with 3 power plants, each, that are to meet the set standards and West Bengal with 2 power stations.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa and Rajasthan, each has one power plant that is yet to comply with the emission standards.
