India doubles nuclear power output in just three years

Produces 32.46 MW of nuclear power in 2012.

India’s nuclear power sector produced 14.93 MW of electricity in 2008-09. It production has rose to 18.83 MW in 2009-10; 26.47 in 2010-11 and 32.46 MW in 2011-12.

Indian officials noted that the conclusion of international agreements on nuclear cooperation have enabled India to import nuclear fuel. The availability of fuel has enabled an additional capacity of 660 MW with the commissioning of two nuclear power generation units in 2010 and a nuclear power station in 2011.

The signing of civil nuclear cooperation agreements also opened opportunities for setting-up large capacity light water reactors based on foreign technical cooperation.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd is building a nuclear power plant with Russian assistance at Kudankulam.
