This due to “greener” economic growth.

Energy demand in China to slow to 1.8% after 2020: official

Yang Qing, executive vice president of the State Grid Corporation of China, predicts that China's energy demand growth could slow to 1.8% per annum in the decade after 2020.

He noted that China's energy demand is growing at over 4% per year in the current decade. This growth, however, may slow significantly in the decade between 2020 and 2030 as economic growth becomes greener and slower.

SGCC forecasts growth in energy demand to drop to 1.8% per year based on a projected growth of 5.3% for the Chinese economy.

He said no official forecast has been announced for the decade between 2020 and 2030, but believes energy consumption is likely to peak some time between 2030 and 2040. Yang also said China has been making every effort to pursue greener and more sustainable growth.

China intends that non-fossil fuels account for 11.4% of its total energy consumption by the end of 2015.
