Agra to become India’s first solar city
But the main purpose of this RE project will be to save the famous Taj Mahal. India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has announced that Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, will be the country’s first solar city.
The agency has approved plans to develop a new solar energy system in Agra that will eventually supply all of the city’s electricity needs. Once the new solar energy system is operational, it will be able to immediately provide 10% of Agra’s energy needs. The five-year project will see the installation of solar-powered cookers and solar-powered street lights.
By 2016, Agra is expected to be more reliant on solar energy than any other city in India. Government sources, however, said the solar city project is not actually concerned with environmentalism. Its main purpose of the project is to save the Taj Mahal. The world famous monument to love is being degraded by air pollution, turning the building’s brilliant white structure into a dirty hue.
