Solar® Turbines TitanTM 250, A New Species is born

The 22 MWe Titan™ 250 Gas Turbine is thelatest addition to Solar®’s product portfolioand its most powerful unit. The Titan™ 250development program, launched in 2003, wasdriven by the conjunction of feedback fromexperienced Gas Turbines end-users, and bySolar® Turbines design philosophy which setshigh standards in terms of product reliability,performance and emissions.

With the aim of conciliating Customers’requirements in terms of Gas Turbineperformance and maintainability while keepinghigh durability levels and minimizing theenvironmental footprint - two characteristicsthat have built Solar® Turbines reputation-;engineers had to imagine a hybrid design concept that would pave the way for the Titan™250’s positioning as a market benchmark.

In fact, the 10-60 MWe Gas Turbine powerrange comprises two families of Gas Turbines:Aeroderivatives and Industrial. Both categoriesfeature distinct design principles that used to bedeemed discrepant.

While Aeroderivative Gas Turbines areoriginally designed for the aviation industryand later modified for land based applications,Industrial Gas Turbines, also known as Heavy-Duty Turbines, were engineered from the very beginningfor power generation or mechanicaldrive applications. The first are renowned for their excellent fuel efficiency and theirstraightforward maintainability, the latter fortheir robustness and the “cleanliness” of theircombustion process.

Remarkably, the aerodynamics of the Titan™250’s rotating components (i.e. compressor,gas generator and power turbine) have beenoptimized in such a way that the Titan™250’s 40% mechanical efficiency is achievedat a firing temperature that allows the use ofproven, durable materials for the hot sectionof the turbine. On top of this, maintainabilityis improved thanks to the modular design ofthe Gas Turbine, which enables the exchangeof turbine parts according to their actual wearcondition.

With the Titan™ 250, Solar® Turbines havemanaged to blend the best of both worlds –Aeroderivative and Industrial - in order to provideCustomers with a very robust turbine capableof burning a variety of fuels while achievingoutstandingly low emission levels.

Among the Titan™ 250’s notable advantages,its best-in-class fuel efficiency and fast start-uptime provide high added-value to Customerbusiness while its package lightness andcompactness allows it to be transported in onepiece inside a commercial airplane.

For all these reasons, Turbomach believes thatthe Titan™ 250 provides the adequate answerto tomorrow’s energy challenges, namely: fuelscarcity, electricity grid instability and even morestringent emissions regulations.

While all Titan™ 250 Customers will benefitfrom overall low operational costs, industrial users will value its wide range ofuseful heat generation as a cogenerator thanks to theaddition of exhaust gas post-firing systems;grid operators will benefit from its quick startupand exceptional load acceptance; and localutilities or municipalities will provide reliablepower at high electrical efficiency in combinedcyclemode.

Since the Titan™ 250’s official commercialintroduction in 2008, 10 units have been placedon the market with the aim of supportingCustomers in:
-securing natural gas distribution in Germanyand in the US
-running a paper mill in Spain in compliance withstringent local CHP and emissions regulations
-supporting Turkish industries by providing costeffectiveelectricity
