JERA, IHI ink MoU for ammonia usage expansion in Malaysia

They will explore co-firing ammonia in thermal plants in the country.

JERA subsidiary JERA Asia and IHI Asia Pacific signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to study the ways to increase the use of ammonia in Malaysia’s energy sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In a statement, JERA said the parties are supported by a grant from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization to establish the technology that will enable co-firing of 20% of fuel ammonia at the Hakinan Thermal Power Station.

They are also tasked to conduct demonstration projects to reach a co-firing ratio of over 50%.

JERA said ammonia and hydrogen are expected to contribute to achieving Malaysia’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 from 2005 levels and carbon neutrality by 2050.
