China’s solar exports up 34% YoY in H1 2023

The country produces around eight in every 10 solar panels.

China recorded a 34% year-on-year increase in solar module exports in the first half of 2023 to reach 114 gigawatts (GW), around half of which were supplied to Europe.

In a report, think tank Ember said solar modules or fully assembled solar panels accounted for 90% or $23.8b of China’s solar exports during the period.

Over the last 12 months, the country shipped 111 GW of solar modules to Europe which is equivalent to the total installed capacity of the United States. Brazil is the largest single destination for China’s solar module exports outside Europe with 19 GW.

Solar cells or unassembled solar panel parts accounted for the remaining 10% at $2.5b.

The report said the 114 GW exported by China could generate enough electricity for Sweden and is equivalent to the total installed solar panels in the US at 113 GW.
